Antiarthritic Tonic. The herbs in this formula have shown anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-rheumatic and immune enhancing actions. Devil's Claw root (Haragophytum procumbent)

Actions: Anti-inflammatory, antiviral.

Common Use: This plant has found its main use in the relief of arthritis symptoms. This action appears due to the presence of a glycoside called harpagoside that reduces inflammation in the joints. This plant also acts as a hepatic aiding the body in liver and gall bladder problems. Best if used continuously for one month.

Peruvian Cat's Claw (Uña de Gato) bark (Uncaria tomentosa) Rainforest

Actions: Deep immune activator, tonic, anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiviral, hypotensive, cardiac tonic.

Common Use: This amazing vine from the Peruvian rain forest is offered in Peruvian pharmacies. 15 to 30 drops 2-3 daily. Do not use with anti-ulcer medications. Not recommended if pregnant or nursing.

Celery seed (Apium graveolens)

Actions: Antirheumatic, diuretic, carminative, sedative.

Common Use: Celery seeds find their main use in the temporary relief of rheumatism, arthritis and gout. They are especially useful in rheumatoid arthritis where there is an associated mental depression. Also useful as a urinary antiseptic and a digestive aid.

Mexican Wild Yam root (Mexican Wild Yam root)

Actions: Antispasmodic, hepatic, anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic, cholagogue, uterine tonic.

Common Use: This valuable herb was at one time the sole source of the chemicals that were used as the raw materials for contraceptive hormone manufacture. In 1936, Japanese researchers discovered glycoside saponins in several Mexican yam species, from these, steroid saponins, primarily diosgenin, could be derived. These derivatives could then be converted to progesterone, an intermediate in cortisone production. Steroid drugs derived from diosgenin include corticosteroids, oral contraceptives, androgens and estrogens (yams do not contain , as sometimes believed, full blown estrogens or other hormones - these substances are produced after four processing steps). Such findings might help explain why, during the previous two centuries of American medicine, wild yam roots have successfully been employed in relieving menstrual cramps, ovarian neuralgia and cramps, after pains and other problems of menses and child birth. Also known to have a therapeutic action on overall liver health, it is believed that wild yam root's ability to lower blood cholesterol levels and lower blood pressure indirectly helps the liver by increasing its efficiency and reducing stress. Also indicated in the relief of rheumatoid arthritis, especially the acute phase where there is intense inflammation.

Black Cohosh root (Cimicifuga racemosa)

Actions: Emmenagogue, antispasmodic, alterative, sedative, nervine, hormonal balancer.

Common Use: Traditionally used as a powerful relaxant, useful in the relief of rheumatic pains, rheumatoid arthritis, osteo-arthritis, muscular and neurological pain and rheumatoid neuralgia, and to beneficially aid the female reproductive system, normalizing menstruation, relieving menstrual cramps and regaining normal hormonal activity. During pregnancy, use only under the guidance of a trained medical professional.

Burdock root (Arctium lappa)

Actions: Alterative, depurative, diuretic, bitter, tonic.

Common Use: This root is well known for its blood cleansing properties and is used in innumerable herbal medicines and blood remedies. Experiments on burdock have shown it to lower blood sugar, and destroy fungal and bacteria cultures.Japanese researchers at Nagoya University found in burdock (aka Gobo root in Japan) a new type of desmutagen, a substance that is uniquely capable of reducing cell mutation in either the absence or the presence of metabolic activation. This new property is so important, the Japanese scientists named it the B-factor for "burdock factor." In general, it is claimed burdock will help restore the body to a state of integration and health. Burdock is also included in the Hoxsey formula and Rene Caisse's Essiac formula.

Horsetail grass (Equisetum arvense) aka Shavegrass

Actions: Astringent, diuretic, vulnerary.

Common Uses: The essential element, silicon, is present in very large amounts in Horsetail. Silicon is necessary for the body to properly utilize calcium. People shown to have calcium deficiencies may not deficient in calcium at all, but rather actually lack silicon in their diets, thus not properly utilizing calcium resulting in deposits.Avoid use with anti-hypertensive drugs.

Jamaican Sarsaparilla root (Equisetum arvense)

Actions: Alterative, depurative, antirheumatic, diuretic, diaphoretic, tonic.

Common Use: Sarsaparilla is a widely applicable alterative, and has a great reputation as a blood purifier. It may be used to aid proper functioning of the body as a whole and in the correction of such diffuse systematic problems as skin (psoriasis) and rheumatic conditions (chronic rheumatism, rheumatoid arthritis). It has also been shown to contain chemicals with properties that aid testosterone activity in the body.

Yarrow flower (Achillea millefolium)

Actions: Diaphoretic, stimulant, hypotensive, astringent, diuretic, tonic, alterative, antiseptic, depurative.

Common Use: Yarrow is one of the best diaphoretic herbs and is a standard remedy for aiding the body to deal with fevers. It lowers blood pressure due to a dilation of the peripheral vessels, stimulates digestion and tones the blood vessels. As a urinary antiseptic it is indicated in infections such as cystitis. Preparations of yarrow flower have been shown to stimulate the gastric juices, this would account for yarrows effectiveness as a tonic, with improved digestion of foods, which is due to the presence of bitter substances in the blossoms. Test tube studies have shown yarrow to possess antibiotic properties. Not recommended if nursing or pregnant.

Oregon Grape root (Berberis/Mahonia aquifolium)

Actions: Alterative, hepatic, cholagogue, laxative, anti-emetic, anticatarrhal, tonic.

Common Use: Oregon grape is similar in action to golden seal and barberry (they all contain berberine). It acts as a tonic on the liver and gall bladder and can be useful in chronic and scaly skin problems, which can be caused by systematic imbalances. Also known to be helpful for stomach and gall bladder conditions, especially where there is associated nausea and vomiting. This herb is included in the Hoxsey formula.

Prickly Ash bark (Xanthoxylum americanum v. sp.)

Actions: Stimulant, tonic, alterative, carminative, diaphoretic, sialagogue, febrifuge.

Common Uses: Prickly ash may be used in a way that is similar to cayenne, although it is slower in action. It is used in many chronic problems such as rheumatism and skin diseases. Any sign of poor circulation can be benefited by the use of this herb, chilblains, cramp in the legs, varicose veins and varicose ulcers. Due to its stimulating effect on the lymphatic system, circulation and mucous membranes, it will have a role in the holistic use of many specific conditions. This herb is also included in the Hoxsey formula.
